Docomomo US/Oregon will host a guided tour of the Mount Angel Abbey Library, one of only two buildings in the United States designed by famed Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Completed in 1970, the library showcases Aalto's graceful modernism while complementing the surrounding monastery campus, much of which dates to the early twentieth century.
The tour will also give participants a special look at materials from the library's rare books and manuscript collection. In addition to providing an opportunity to experience one of Oregon's most significant postwar architectural spaces, the tour will highlight the role of art and architecture in supporting the abbey's educational and religious missions. After the tour, we plan to relax at the Benedictine Brewery taproom to enjoy beer brewed by the abbey's monks.
